SHAPES AT THE BEACH
by
Lynda S. Burch

The beach is our favorite place to visit.

Miss K likes to play Sharkey at the beach.
But she really didn't see one.

Her sister, Little Missy, likes to dig in the sand. See her blue beach bucket?
It has a shape. It is called a CYLINDER.
The rake has a shape, too, but its just called a rake.

One day out at sea we spotted a pirate ship! Wow! What shape are the sails?

Argh! Yer right my mateys.

They are TRIANGLES!

Can you count how many there are?

(Looks like 4.)

After searching the beach, we found lots of seashells.

They were all shapes and sizes and different colors, too.
We washed them and put them in a jar.

Different sea animals used to live in them but now
no one lives there.

We found this pretty orange one. It was not smooth. It had ridges in a radiating pattern almost like a fan. Is a fan a shape?
It is a kind of scallop seashell.

Then we found something super. Bet you know what shape this one is.

It's a starfish! Can you draw a STAR?

This sea shell is often called angel wings, and when you put two together they look like a HEART.

On every beach trip we find at least one delicate white shell that is a CIRCLE. Some are very tiny under a half inch wide and some are as big as six inches across or more!

These shells have a wonderful story that goes with them but we will save that story for another time. They are called sand dollars. But you can't really spend them. You can draw one like this.

One evening we heard a strange sound and looked up.
An orange and white Blimp was sailing down the beach in the sky!
What shape do think that is? I think it is an OVAL.

Thanks for sharing beach shapes with us. We'll be back soon with more beach goodies.
