Sea Duck
by Craig Steele

Windswept waters heaving past,
Can’t wait to get back home at last.
Bobbing round in stormy seas,
I feel so weak down in my knees.
Stomach reels from wavy thrills
(I wish I had some seasick pills).
Just about to lose my mind,
When Mama says, “Quack, quaaack, you’re fine!"

The poem concerns the trials of a young sea duck learning to swim. Sea ducks are the least studied group of North American waterfowl. Problems with sea duck populations (disease; decline) as a result of human environmental impacts are widespread within our hemisphere and are an internationally recognized environmental issue.
