CAN YOU TELL TIME by Marion Tickner
Take the following quiz to see if you really can tell time.
1. Jack, I’ll meet you at quarter to ten. What time will we meet? a. 9:25 b. 9:45 c. 10:25
2. Lunch is served at half past eleven. What time is lunch? a. 5:50 b. 11:30 c. 12:00
3. Mike will meet his grandma at two-ten. Where will the hands be on Grandma’s watch? Clue: the little hand will be on 2. The big hand will be on: a. 2 b. 10 c. 12
4. Molly’s classroom has a big clock with Roman Numerals. Her school starts at IX. What time does the school bell ring? a. 8:00 b. 9:00 c. 11:00
5. Natalie has a dentist appointment at XI. What time does Natalie have to be at the dentist’s office? a. 8:00 b. 9:00 c. 11:00 How did you do? The clock in your home may be a digital clock, showing the numbers, but clocks weren’t always that way. Analog clocks indicate time from 1 to 12. Each number represents five minutes. For instance, there are five minutes between numbers 1 and 2. Your great-great-great-great-grandfather’s clock may have had Roman Numerals. The numbers running around the clock would look like this. I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, XII. Notice IV before V and VI after the V. If V stands for 5, can you figure out why the numerals are listed that way? Now go back over the quiz and see if you can tell time.
Answer Key for "Can You Tell Time" l. b, 2. b, 3. a, 4. b, 5. c Roman Numerals: IV (4) – I (1) is a smaller number than V (5); therefore you subtract 5-1=4 VI (6) – V (5) is the larger number and comes before the smaller I (1), therefore you add 5+1=6.
