ARTICLES FOR MOM, DAD OR TEACHERS
Can I Really Keep the Same Teeth I Have Now? February is National Children’s Dental Health month which makes it a good time to stop and think just how important your teeth are. After you lose all your baby teeth, you’ll get new ones, a complete full set of new teeth. If you take proper care of this new set, they’ll last you a lifetime! That’s right; your new teeth will last you until you’re a Grandma or Grandpa. It’s very importance to brush your teeth to get rid of plaque and stains twice a day. Plaque is the soft and sticky substance that accumulates on the teeth from food debris and bacteria. Listen to what your dentist and the person that cleans your teeth (hygienist) tell you. He or she wants only the best for you and your teeth. When they give you a new toothbrush on your next dental visit I have an idea for your old one. How about making it an extra paintbrush? It will make neat squiggly marks on your paper and you can draw waves in a pretend ocean, a colorful rainbow in the sky or many other things. Keep the old brush with your art supplies so you don’t get them mixed up! Children should brush their teeth for at least two to three minutes and most especially before bedtime. If you have a hard time keeping track of the time, get a sand timer from one of your board games and put it in the bathroom. When all the sand has gone through the little hour glass, you’ll know it’s time to stop brushing. Flossing helps prevent cavities by removing plaque and food particles caught between teeth. Good eating habits with lots of fruit and vegetables will benefit your teeth just as much as your body. Drink lots of fresh water and non sugar fruit drinks. My grandchildren love the sugar free citrus green tea beverages and green tea is very good for us. |
